11月15日 General Aerodynamics Technologies applied on F1 racing carsFirst, I have some troubles with using the Chinese typing program. I will try another one and translate those on Friday (if time's available).
Just did some reviews for my fluid mechanics course today. Some stuff can be extended to the Aerodynamics which you guys are most interested in.
Plus I haven't introduced any of techs related to Formula One for a very long time.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some points highlight here:
Downward Lift: Down force
Why the wings (the aerodynamics components) are short: Safety concern; Short wings have less inertia, & make cars highly maneuverable. But shorter the wings, lower the Lift coefficient, and higher Drag coefficient. Picture 1. F2005 Partial airfoil on the Front Wing Picture 2. Toyota TF105
Airfoils (Dimensionally inverse to the ones applied on the aircraft) Picture 3. The Front Wing of F2004 (CATIA V5 Computer Aided Design) Swirl air (circulation) passing though the tip and side forms bound vortex and trailing vortices, respectively. Those vortices give the car a downward Lift.
Another downward Lift is generated by the wheels: As a symmetrical object, a tire, treated as a cylinder shape has Drag only, but it does when it rotates in the CCW (counterclockwise) direction, two stagnation points are located at the fairly upper part on the tire surface, which indicates that the air flow at the upper part has smaller speed than the lower part. Put in another way, the upper part has larger pressure. The downward Lift is proportional to the wheel’s speed. Picture 4 Effect of Drag Force (same as Resistance shown above) for symmetrical objects However, after the racing car runs few laps, the tire surface getting rougher. Rough surface can bring more air with the wheel rotating, which increases the circulation around the wheel. Circulations generate an upward Lift to the wheel. But as the wheel contacts to the ground, the circulation cannot be completed. As a result, high speed rotating wheels generate downward Lift. No time to put on pics. No time! Go back to study.... @ 2:30 am How does an engineer who has such a complicated life to make other lives easier? ----------------------------------------------------------------- Any concerns?
